Jason Pettis is Scoutmaster of Troop 130 in Golden, Colorado who takes ‘be prepared’ seriously.
He wrote in to say:
I’ve got a tote I bring with a bunch of extra gear that I loan out to adults (and occasionally scouts) that I call my “Be Prepared” box. It’s come in handy a time or two, when a sad scout (or dad) needs a cup for cocoa (or coffee). Here it is:
This is my Be Prepared box that I take on almost all camping trips.
1. Safety Glasses (currently scratched all to heck) 2. Extra Coleman stove gas line 3. Extra tarp 4. Electricity and adapters (Sometimes we get a campsite with power, and need to tap into it) 5. Kite String – I have no idea why I have this 6. Extra mess kits 7. Folding Camp Shovel
1. Hammer (lent out reluctantly) 2. Hatchet 3. Extra Propane bottles 4. First Aid Kit 5. Extra bits of rope, string, paracord, etc 6. Dutch Oven Lifter 7. Glow Stick 8. Plastic Zip Ties (useful for holding tents together in windstorms) 9. Toaster. Because – HEY! A TOASTER!Also, the metal bowl in the red circle was made by a scout at summer camp in metal working merit badge; he gave it to me after as a memento and in appreciation of a great time.
1. Hot Pads and Gloves (including my red Dutch Oven gloves) 2. Coffee Pot 3. Extra water bottle and canteen (official BSA!) 4. Duct Tape – the 11th essential 5. Extra tent stakes in various sizes 6. Extra cups (plastic and metal) 7. Mess kit – two sets of plates, bowls, fork-knife-spoon 8. My usual cups – one metal, one plastic 9. My Travel Hammock
