The trekking program at Sabattis Adventure Camp is unmatched by any Scout Camp in the region, all crews get Kevlar canoes, the latest in cooking equipment (both jet boils and/or whisper lites) along with comfortable PFD’s and properly sized paddles. All needed food is supplied and each crew gets a trained Voyageur to accompany them and to help navigate the Adirondack park. Spar pole climbing and .30-06 shooting is available for eligible crews upon their return from their trek.
Sabattis offers both an in-camp patrol cooking experience for Troops as well as full week high adventure treks. Troops in the traditional summer camp program can earn merit badges in Aquatics, Outdoor skills, Ecology and shooting sports. We only teach badges in the morning, the afternoon is open for fun, open swims, open boating, open shoots, trimaran sailing, war canoes (entire patrol in one canoe), mountain biking, mountain boarding, COPE, muzzleloading, spar pole climbing etc.
Many troops are reluctant to try patrol style cooking instead opting for dinning halls. I grew up in a dinning hall camp and never realized how much we missed. A patrol leader truly becomes a leader when they are responsible collecting the food, preparing the food and cleaning up each meal every day for a week. By the end of the week, the young man has developed into a fine leader. In addition to the leadership development the food is hot when served. Troops are continually pleased at how well the rest of their camping trips go after a week at Sabattis. Their patrols become well oiled machines at preparing meals.

Sabattis sits in 1200 acres of our own including our best natural feature, 200 acre Bear Pond. We sit in the middle of the Adirondack park which is the largest park in the lower 48 states at 6 million acres. Within the park are 46 high peaks, and thousands of miles of canoeing, many lakes are easily connected by a short portage (carrying of equipment including canoes over land). We are five and half hours from New Jersey and fifty miles from Lake Placid. We offer a coach bus service from N.J. to Sabattis.
PROGRAM HISTORY
Sabattis celebrated 50 years of adventure in 2009, it begin to meet the needs of the Watchung Area Council, NJ. Originally troops would just pick a spot anywhere in the woods and camp for the week, the camp only offered an Aquatics area. Eventually permanent campsites with running water and latrines evolved along with the expansion of in camp programing. Trekking started in the 1980’s. The camp is now part of the Patriot’s Path Council, BSA of NJ. The program has been steadily expanding over the last 15 years. Our newest addition is the war canoes 2009 and for 2010 .30-06 shooting range.
