Summer Camp Resources

It’s a privilege to accompany Scouts to summer camp, the greatest week in a patrol’s year. We seize every opportunity to let the Scouts do things independently. While at camp I put myself and the other adults of guests and observers. We define our area in the campsite (not the choice, prominent most comfortable area- give that to your Scouts) and stay in it. We don’t follow our Scouts around camp nor, with rare exception, lead them around camp....

Two Things You (probably) Didn't Think About Taking to Summer Camp.

Two humble things find a number of uses at summer camp; clothespins and index cards. I usually have a pocket full of index cards, and use them all day long to take notes, leave messages, and post reminders or notices for youth leaders. With clothespins or thumbtacks I can clip them to a tent flap, a branch, or pin them to our bulletin board. Here’s ten ideas that you may find useful and fun:...

An Ontario Scouting Adventure

John Wiebke Scoutmaster of Troop 358 in Zionsville, Indiana, shares his summer plans (and what great plans they are!) Nothing makes the winter pass quicker than looking forward to a great summer adventure! Which Scout Summer Camp?

Two troops, same Scout summer camp, same week; one troop has a wonderful time and goes home smiling, one has a difficult time and leaves unhappy. I observed hundreds of troops and thousands of Scouts As a staff member and camp director for a dozen summers. I can tell you one thing that makes or breaks a week at camp. It is not facilities, location, staff, or program. Those things will have less to do with the experience you’ll have once you are there than you expect....

Summer Camp Solar Homing Beacon

Here’s a clever idea from Camp Wanderer that combines a canning jar and the top section of a solar re-charged garden light to create a lighted container for things like matches at camp. While I am at summer camp I’ll have a jar sitting on my picnic table with a spare headlamp or small flashlight inside in case night falls before I have bothered to find one. The jar also serves as a “homing beacon” as we walk back from evening activities....

A Scouter's Summer Camp Schedule

Here’s a Scouter’s summer camp schedule: Time Scouts Scouters [6:45] AM Awakened by the SPL and PL’s. Flag is raised and all Scouts go to polar bear swim as a group. I used to get up and go to Polar Bear swim years ago (like 15 or so) but I think it’s important for the Scouts to do this on their own. 7;15 AM Scouts return from polar bear swim, get changed and begin cleaning up the campsite....
