As we confront the fallout of coronavirus let’s remind ourselves Scouting is staying connected and bridging the gaps. Yep. we are in a pickle aren’t we? We have very little idea of what our lives will look like this time next year. Coronavirus has shaken us all up and we are all doing our best to hold on. Scouting will continue to be around, though, if we look for it in the right place....
We hadn’t gone more than a hundred yards or so when an enemy rose up in front of us and started spraying us with a Schmeizer machine gun or ‘burp gun’ as we called them. We hit the ground and I, for one, just tried to get closer to the earth without returning fire immediately. What did happen immediately was that they started throwing in artillery or mortar fire (or both) on us....

I think the way we have set things up with totally separate units for Cub Packs, Scout Troops, and Venture Crews is the source of many difficulties. Our volunteers tend to move on with their children, leaving cub packs with the least experienced volunteers....

The most important thing about a Scout’s backpack is a proper fit. The second most important consideration is whether it will fit them next year, let alone three years from now. A top-of-the-line $400.00 backpack that doesn’t fit properly or grow along with a Scout is not only a waste of money, it’s going to be so uncomfortable a Scout will think twice before he goes camping or backpacking again....
Scouts are much more likely to outgrow a pair of boots before they have a chance to wear them out. You won’t get much return on investing in top-of-the-line $200.00 hiking boots once they are outgrown. Quality socks, however, are well worth the return on comfort, a few extra dollars here is very well spent.4 Here’s a my outdoor footwear infographic Boots and Shoes Footwear models change frequently, so I am recommending brands rather than specific models....
In the outdoors, proper clothing keeps you comfortable; more importantly, it keeps you safe. It’s surprising that parents sometimes don’t seem to give much thought to what their Scouts wear to a camping trip. If your troop is like mine they will be rained on and experience unseasonably cold temperatures on just about every camp out! Without the right clothing, Scouts will be cold, wet, have a bad experience, and be reluctant to go camping again....
My choices for cooking gear and stoves are inexpensive (or free) and practical. For decades, the default cooking gear choice for Scouts was the metal clamshell mess kit. *I don’t recommend mess kits!*They are not as practical or useful as the alternatives now available; * Hot food does not cool as quickly in plastic cup, bowl or plate as it does in metal ones. * The mess kit pot is holds around 8 ounces of water, barely enough to fill the smallish plastic cup....
Sleeping well can make or break a camping trip. As with other gear, there are a bewildering number of sleeping bags and pads available. I recommend a moderately priced synthetic mummy bag from a reputable manufacturer like Coleman or Slumberjack. Models change frequently, if the specific models I recommend aren’t available choose a reputable brand with similar qualities. What Temperature Rating? The temperature rating or “comfort rating” is the coldest temperature the bag is designed to withstand....
