| Answers from Clarke Green on June 15, 2015 at 9:49 am What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? I think the way we have set things up with totally separate units for Cub Packs, Scout Troops, and Venture Crews is the source of many difficulties. Our volunteers tend to move on with their children, leaving cub packs with the least experienced volunteers. Few parents and cubs have nay understanding of the the other age divisions in Scouting, and they can’t see beyond what they are doing at the moment or how it is connected to what happens in the years to come. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? A common committee for Packs, Troops, and Crews, sharing experience and resources, emphasizing the continuity of the whole Scouting program. Comment on Clarke Green’s answer |
| Answers from Mike on June 15, 2015 at 1:09 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Making Pack Meeting as a business meeting would be just announcements and not much else. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make it fun for the boys and get them involve Dinga skits and cheers to start. Comment on Mike’s answer |
| Answers from Craig Dickson on June 15, 2015 at 1:35 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Not recruiting strongly – assuming either that kids will come because they always have, or that they won’t because they have too many other activities. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make recruiting the most important single job that the Committee chair oversees. That doesn’t mean do it yourself of course, but it certainly deserves as much attention as planning camping or selling popcorn. It’s a job for your absolute best volunteer. Comment on Craig Dickson’s answer |
| Answers from Robert Simpkins on June 16, 2015 at 8:40 am What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Lack of adult participation. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? I’m not sure, but having strong cub Master and Committee chair go a long way to building the relationships with parents and other potential adults. More recruiting of new boys can improve the pool of potential leaders. Comment on Robert Simpkins’s answer |
| Answers from Julie Rash on June 16, 2015 at 11:58 am What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Not knowing where their money is spent and how much the pack needs to save each year for larger purchases. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Have the Treasurer track in a spreadsheet each income and expense by categories (camping, advancements, library, website, dues/recharter, t-shirts, equipment, etc.) Comment on Julie Rash’s answer |
| Answers from Michael Menninger on June 16, 2015 at 12:23 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Not recruiting and/or requiring enough parents to be in leadership or pseudo-leaderhip positions so that the few leaders that are working do too much, get burned out and can’t provide a good program. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? 1. When talking with the parents about the program before or during sign up, tell them how much the pack relies on ALL parents to chip in either as registered or non-registered leaders. 2. Making it almost a “requirement” that parents work in some aspect in the program. 3. Letting some event NOT happen when there’s no one to step up to run/lead/organize it. Or if someone was the leader and things didn’t get done, then that (non critical event to the program) just doesn’t happen. Comment on Michael Menninger’s answer |

Not following through with recruiting leads, or not following through often enough. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? | Answers from Nicole on June 16, 2015 at 12:45 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Parents lose sight of what’s important - the boys- and make it about themselves and achievements for themselves and not the kids. Alot of the adults are selfish and petty. They argue and one up eachother and it makes for a horribly stressful environment. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? We quit the pack and no longer have these problems. Moved on to another unit that u fortunately is gearing up for the same mistakes. It is very sad. Comment on Nicole’s answer |
| Answers from Jim Lorkowski on June 16, 2015 at 1:40 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? 1. Accepting low attendance by parents at pack meetings. This quickly leads to problems in all pack activities. 2. No outdoor program. 3. Not using den chiefs. 4. Not taking part in a cub day camp. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? 1. Make it clear to the parents when a boy first joins the pack that Cub Scouting is a family activity. The absolute minimum required by the pack is the participation of at least one parent or substitute at each pack meeting. Eventually, after attending a few meetings, almost everyone recognizes the need, and the joy in helping, and volunteers to do something. Everyone benefits. 2. Hold a Pack family at a state park (restrooms) once a year. 3. Approach more than one troop if needed. Read a Den Chief Handbook before you ask. 4. Go…fun activities and lots of new faces. Comment on Jim Lorkowski’s answer |

| Answers from Edzel on June 16, 2015 at 8:50 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? 1. Parents thinking they need to keep reinventing the program themselves 2. Scout leaders only focusing on their own dens or committee responsibilities. 3. Thinking that parents will respond to general calls for volunteers. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? 1. Encourage adults to seek out all the available information and training that previous generations of scouters have amassed. We have the internet now, it’s not that hard. 2. Leaders need to remember to make friends with everyone and help everywhere that they are able. These friendships are the bonds that keep families involved and give you resources to turn to when the Pack needs something done. Buy someone a cup of coffee once in a while. 3. Leaders need to always work to identify specific people for specific jobs and ask them personally for help. Parents are often more willing to do something if you ask them face to face. Start small. Have a leadership succession plan in place. Comment on Edzel’s answer |

| Answers from Jeff Hyer on June 16, 2015 at 10:00 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Not doing enough engaging with the Cub parents. Den meetings and Pack meetings engage with the boys, while nobody engages with the parents to keep the up to date with events, pack needs, and where they can contribute talents. | Answers from Jody Brown on June 16, 2015 at 11:52 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Poor planning by enthusiastic but untrained leaders. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make sure that all leaders are trained to do the job they have and include them in the planning process. Listen to all ideas that are offered and put into motion the best plan that the group comes up with. Leaders will work harder to ensure success if there is a sense of ownership and not duty to just follow orders. Comment on Jody Brown’s answer |
| Answers from Michael Durbin on June 17, 2015 at 9:15 am What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Not thoroughly communicating with the parents. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Better communication is key. Don’t assume everyone knows something is happening because it’s the way you’ve always done it. There’s always an adult that has never been a scout and is experiencing it for the first time with their son. If they get disengaged, they’ll stop participating and bringing their son. | Answers from Tim Smith on June 17, 2015 at 9:20 am What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Cubmaster holding down too many responsibilities. This is based solely on my experience as a Cubmaster when my son was in the Pack. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Get more parental involvement. I think this is a terminal problem of the Cub Scout Program. It is incredibly hard to recruit parents to fill much needed volunteer positions. I don’t have a cure for the problem though. Things we do in the Troop don’t seem to work in the Pack. Comment on Tim Smith’s answer |
| Answers from Chuck Baker, Cub Master- Pack 98, Chester County Council, PA on June 17, 2015 at 10:49 am What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Good leaders trying to do everything themselves, and not delegating or involving to other parents and leaders. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make this an open topic of of discussions among leaders and parents (Pack Parent Time, Committee Meetings, e-mails, etc.). Remind parents and leaders that it doesn’t have to be perfect, and allowing others to help and make mistakes is part of the learning and growing process for the leaders and parents. It allows the leaders to grow as leaders and not just doers, and helps to prevent burnout. It also show the Cubs that adults can and should participate and learn, and that its okay to try new things that you might not be good at. Comment on Chuck Baker, Cub Master- Pack 98, Chester County Council, PA’s answer |

Some of the adults have their own egos in mind when making decisions. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make sure all of the adults have the ability to speak up and be heard. If one person (Cubmaster or Comm Chair for example) has all of the power then their agenda is the only one being served. | Answers from Cathy Montegna on June 18, 2015 at 4:40 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? When one person, or maybe one person and their spouse, takes on too much responsibility for the unit. It usually starts out innocently enough with the thought that “I can handle that this year” or “I’ll do that until we find someone else.” But what happens is that suddenly one or two people are doing almost everything and nobody else wants to take on their job, which is really three or four jobs. This leaves Packs with “burnt-out” leaders, or with a lack of leadership when this person moves on. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make sure that all of the families in a Pack understand that there are plenty of jobs and that everyone can help at some level. When a leader gives another adult a responsibility, don’t second guess them, let them do the job and offer support or guidance if they want it. If a leader really feels like they can’t get any help, ask your Commissioner for input and assistance. Sometimes having someone from outside the Pack come in helps people understand the importance of helping out. Comment on Cathy Montegna’s answer |
| Answers from Lyle DeWalt Scoutmaster Troop 214 Cedar Rapids, IA on June 19, 2015 at 2:13 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Not fully connecting with a Troop to utilize Den Chiefs and other resources; recruiting, leadership, etc. Along the same lines, not a lot of Packs take advantage of monthly roundtables. I see a lot of Packs (and Troops for that matter) where a handful of leaders try and do everything which leads to burnout and other issues. Also, Packs, Troops, Crews, etc. are NOT in competition with one another. It seems to be viewed that way sometimes. We’re all in this together. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Obviously to reach out to Troops, Adult leadership, and Council resources to network. Don’t forget about the unit commissioners too. A lot of times they are looked on as interference when they are actually there to assist. Comment on Lyle DeWalt Scoutmaster Troop 214 Cedar Rapids, IA’s answer |

| Answers from Matt Higgins on June 30, 2015 at 12:38 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Give in to meeting with little frequency. Most packs meet once a month, but the dens only schedule two meetings a month and count the pack meeting. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Commit to having den meeting three times a month. Combined with the monthly pack meeting, this still works out to a small commitment compared to other youth activities. My kids play sports and do other activities too, but it’s Scouts that I know will have the biggest positive impact on them. Comment on Matt Higgins’s answer |

| Answers from Gretchen on July 19, 2015 at 8:28 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? having one person who says “I will do that” all the time. Don’t let them, and don’t let others let them. The pack will be much stronger if more people work on various aspects of the pack tasks. Also, make sure people “own” the job they are doing. Don’t rush in to rescue them. Parents won’t volunteer for anything if you rush in and say, “I’ll do it”. If no one volunteers, then say, “Well, that’s too bad. No one stepped up this year to coordinate the XYZ fair so we can’t do it.” What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? Make sure you appreciate those volunteers, offer guidance but resist taking over. If they need help, fine a co-coordinator to help them. Comment on Gretchen’s answer |
| Answers from Curtis Dorwart on August 1, 2015 at 1:26 pm What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? -Adults (leaders) focusing on “their kid” to the detriment of the unit and other boys -Effort to run the pack comes down to 1 or 2 adults -Trying to go way bigger, better, and more complicated with pack meetings and events. It is not sustainable. What are the biggest mistakes you have seen cub packs make? -Training! Understand the aims and methods -Good communication within the pack and core leadership (CM, CC etc) always be reaching out to engage parents for help in little ways (at first at least) and use every opportunity to explain the program and why things are done a certain way. Many hands make light work. -Sometimes you have to ‘fire’ a volunteer that resists effort to train and follow the program for the benefit of all the boys Comment on Curtis Dorwart’s answer |
